When used for landscape irrigation, reclaimed water usually does not have adverse impacts on plants, although in some cases high levels of salts or constituents such as boron can adversely affect vegetation (see Chapter 8). Furthermore, the potential for ingestion of irrigation water is limited. Depending on the area being irrigated, its location relative to populated areas, and the extent of public access or use of the grounds, the microbiological requirements and operational controls placed on the system may differ.
This is particularly advantageous for industries located near populated areas that generate large volumes of wastewater effluent. Cooling Water. The predominant application of reclaimed water by industry is for cooling water. There are more than 40 power plants in the United States that use municipal wastewater as plant makeup water (Veil, 2007). Examples of a steam electric generating plant and a nuclear plant that use reclaimed water for cooling are provided in Boxes 2-5 and 2-6. In general, the major problems experienced by power plants employing reclaimed water for cooling are scale formation, biological growth, and corrosion.
