The organization was founded by Gerald Lattin and a consortium of 43 industry professionals who gathered at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, to discuss problems and opportunities unique to the inﬂight catering industry.
Yet less than a decade after its coining, the word began acquiring perjorative connotations, and the interrelationships it described began coming under attack. These negative associations with agribusiness came partly from small farmers, worried about farm consolidation and still attracted to the agrarian image of virtuous, self-sufﬁcient production; they emerged as well from the health fears spawned by extensive pesticide, herbicide, and chemical fertilizer use, fears that crystallized with the publication of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring (1964); they appeared, too, in the general public dismay over California farmowners’ callous treatment of farmworkers revealed by the protests of Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers in the mid-1960s; and ﬁnally, if less speciﬁcally, they were inﬂuenced by a general distrust of big business and big government that characterized the social and political upheavals of the later 1960s.
