These negative associations with agribusiness came partly from small farmers, worried about farm consolidation and still attracted to the agrarian image of virtuous, self-sufficient production; they emerged as well from the health fears spawned by extensive pesticide, herbicide, and chemical fertilizer use, fears that crystallized with the publication of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring (1964); they appeared, too, in the general public dismay over California farmowners’ callous treatment of farmworkers revealed by the protests of Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers in the mid-1960s; and finally, if less specifically, they were influenced by a general distrust of big business and big government that characterized the social and political upheavals of the later 1960s.
