The West Germanic branch includes not just OE, but Old High German, Old Saxon, and Old Frisian. Although OE is the direct ancestor of Modern English (NE), over the past thousand years the language has gone through so many radical changes in its syntax, lexicon, pronunciation, orthography, and spelling that the connections between OE and NE are often difficult to see.
