During the economic boom of the 1980s and 1990s, these two axes attracted investments in property development primarily in housing and commercial facilities. Commercial, especially retail and office facilities, sprung up along the main roads in the city and gradually crept over the main thoroughfares leading out of the city proper. New college and university campuses were built and old campuses were renovated and upgraded with multi-story buildings.
