Philosophy cannot make these tensions disappear entirely, but it can cultivate the sort of understanding that reconciles us to our world, and encourages us to start asking the right questions about it; and these are prerequisites, Hegel thinks, for then changing our world in lasting and satisfying ways. The main reason Hegel’s early writings are important is that they show us how deeply pragmatic, engaged, and worldly his project is. He was deeply moved by the cross-currents of European culture at the end of the eighteenth century, and tried to find a way to overcome the many forms of separation that had emerged.

He also explores the way that relations of recognition can be solidified in the public sphere, through institutionalization and law. It is also in these pre-Phenomenology writings that Hegel begins to formulate his conception of ‘ethical life,’ which signifies the totality of relations of recognition in a society. It is in and through the relations of ‘ethical life’ that each and every person becomes free and follows a path of self-development. Hegel’s notion of ‘ethical life’ will be developed in the Phenomenology, and then become the central form of unity-in-difference for 38 HEGEL’S EARLY WRITINGS: OVERCOMING SEPARATION his political philosophy in the Philosophy of Right, but at this point, it should just be noted that with this idea, Hegel definitively moves away from Kant.

Hegel is clear, though, that ‘the understanding’ carries out necessary and useful work: we need to make distinctions so that we can comprehend what is going on the world, and grasping reality in this way is a positive and creative act. Indeed, without ‘the understanding,’ we would be left only with mysticism, superstition, and a rather paltry grasp of reality. But we should not stop after ‘the understanding’ has done its work, because we then run the risk of suffering at the hands of our own creation: the basic dichotomies of ‘the understanding’ tend to outlive their usefulness as they become ossified by cultural practices and institutions, and ultimately undermine the unity of life.
