At the Battle of Bunker Hill, he took up arms and fought.
The British woke to find the Americans had escaped. Washington’s army lost the rest of New York by mid-September. They continued losing the battles that followed. The American troops retreated through parts of upstate New York and New Jersey. By December 1776, the Continental army had fallen back to Pennsylvania. Battered but not broken, Washington’s men had a tough winter ahead. The Continental army’s daring nighttime escape was a victory for the patriots, even though they had lost the battle for Long Island.
