I had grown up working on ranches down in Texas and had been taught that there was no better way of checking cattle than to ride through them on horseback. On this ranch, that was not possible. When they saw a horseit didn't matter whether he was moving at a high lope or at a walk, toward them or away from themwhen these cattle saw a horse in the pasture, they turned and ran. To a cowboy who enjoyed riding quietly through a bunch of cows, checking udders and eyes and admiring the new crop of calves, that proved a terrible frustration.
But he still had one major hurdle to clear. His wife had been born and raised in Toledo. All her family and friends lived in the city, and there was abundant reason for assuming that she could never adjust to living on a ranch in the stark Texas Panhandle. He said nothing about the opening at the ranch until they were back in Toledo, and then he broached the subject with cunning: "Honey, do you remember how much you liked that cute little house on the ranch? " Janet said she would give it a try, and in November Tom resigned his job at the Medical College and they moved to Texas.
Ten minutes after I met Bill Ellzey, I knew that he and I would make that trip together. Nine months later, in June of 1972, Bill's cousin Steve Ellzey hauled us, two horses, and a pack mule to the old ghost town of Plemons and we a set out on a fifteen-day, 140-mile trip down the river.
