For example, if we consider a hypothetical typical Illinois mine, an extraction thickness of about 3 m at a depth of about 200m produces a ground subsidence of about 2m. e. 5%. However, the potentiometric response to the remaining void-space increase is disproportionately large because of the low porosity of hydraulically effective fractures and the low storage coefficient of confined aquifers.
The bedrock is covered by unconsolidated deposits consisting mainly of Illinoian till containing minor sand and gravel units, overlain by Wisconsinan glacial lake deposits, capped by loess. The drift cover is 18-27 m thick at panel 1 and 12–18 m at Panel 5. Farms and homes around the site generally have either shallow, large-diameter (l–2m), water-table wells into the upper 6–8 m of drift, or drilled wells into sandstone. Yields of all aquifers are poor, and most homes are now connected to city water supplies.
