The capital city, Jakarta, decorates its main streets with red and white lights. ” For days before the holiday, newspaper and television commentators share their insights into the country’s progress since independence. Schools hold contests to see which class can create the most patriotic decorations. Classes also compete in games and races. Citizens work together to clean up their communities, pulling weeds, repainting public areas, and cleaning drains. Some neighborhood associations require members to fly the Indonesian flag, with its two equal wide horizontal stripes, red above white, in front of their houses; in the past, people even repainted their homes so they would look nice for the holiday.
