Consequently, meat and dairy products from grass-fed animals are clean in the sense that they are without drugs and hormones that industrially raised animals are given for weight gain and disease prevention, and in terms of their environmental impact. Such meat is humanely raised, from birth to slaughter, on family farms (not large food factories), usually by one farmer. Pastured animals produce manure that enriches the fields they roam on and nourishes birds and other wildlife, promoting a diverse ecosystem.
The best producers and processors will do all that they can during this period to keep the animals comfortable and relaxed in this new environment; a poor slaughterhouse will keep animals dirty, crowded, starving, and thirsty in this limbo for days or even longer.
