Very little is known about most of these pathways. Only the biosynthetic pathway for saxitoxins (etiologic agents of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning) is relatively well understood. However, enough is known about virtually all the pathways to say that it is certain that multiple, probably unique, enzymes are required. The only exception to this general rule appears to be the synthesis of domoic acid by diatoms, where only a few (one to three) unique enzymes may be required (45). Although almost no data are yet available for the enzymes themselves, it can be predicted that the genes encoding these enzymes may occupy large segments of the organisms’ DNA, and that collectively, possession of such genetic arrays may serve as a distinctive ‘‘signature,’’ which might be used to identify toxin-producers (46).
