With an eye to the needs of future settlers, Winthrop had been a strong advocate of giving existing residents no more land than they could work. After the Reverend John Cotton convinced the assembly that God intended the elders to make such decisions, the inÂ�habÂ�iÂ�tants scheduled a new election where they chose a more balanced committee.
