Sylvanus Thayer A native of Massachusetts, Sylvanus Thayer (17851872) graduated from Dartmouth in 1807, and then entered West Point, graduating in 1808 and being commissioned in the Engineers. Save for a brief tour as an instructor at the academy, he spent the next four years working on coast defenses in New York and New England. On the outbreak of the War of 1812 he served as engineer on the staffs of Henry Dearborn and Wade Hampton on the Page 27 Canadian border. Although he saw no action in the war, he emerged as a captain and brevet major.

Much of his time was spent slogging through swamps in search of Black Hawk and his men. He did, however, endure some physical hardship and helped to bury five men who had been killed and scalped by the Indians. During his brief military career Lincoln was twice under arrest for minor infractions of military law. In later life, Lincoln rarely referred to his military service, and then only with some self-denigrating bit of humor. Nevertheless, he seems to have been mildly proud of having served.

Houston One of the giants of American history, Sam Houston (17931863) was a native of Virginia. After his father died when he was 14, Houston's mother took her nine children to Tennessee. " In 1812 he ran a school for a time, but the following year volunteered for the war with Britain. Houston's war service was entirely in the then southwest, against the Creek Indians. During his five years of military service he was severely wounded, became a close friend of Andrew Jackson and rose to first lieutenant.
